This is not the usual file association settings that can be accomplished on just about every Microsoft Windows operating system version. Although this solution can be used on windows 7 desktop or windows XP, the solution is more geared to a multi-user environment like terminal server, RDS (remote desktop server), with or without citrix xenapp.

With windows server 2008 RDS (terminal server) file associations changed in that an administrator can;t simply logon to the windows 2008 or windows 2008 R2 server and set a file associations and it will apply to all users who login to the server automatically. File association and also what program/application starts up for associated files is per user not per server.
