Microsoft decided starting with Vista to remove telnet from the defualt installation of the operating system. Perhaps it was for security or perhaps it was to save drive space ūüėČ ¬†Eeither way, telnet is not used that often or ever by the masses but for some who have to work on devises such as networking equipment it is extremely handy. It also comes in handy with network printers.

There are other tools out there like free putty and Secure CRT. The tools work fine but the fact it was removed after being part of the OS since the earliest of windows days can catch many by surprise and even knowing it is not there, I still get caught when I get a laptop of desktop¬†upgrade¬†and need to simply telnet into some hardware, it’s just not there. ¬†Sure I have Secure CRT and putty is a¬†downloadable¬†exe.

Getting back onto your desktop, laptop or server is as simple however as adding it back in as a feature.
