DNS server machine currently has no DNS domain name

DNS server machine currently has no DNS domain name

DNS server machine currently has no DNS domain name

This was a domain controller whose records in DNS were showing only the hostname name of the DC/DNS server. The records in DNS did not show the full internal FQDN. For example, the server name was only displayed, not server.domain.local . Computer group policies would not apply to member computers in the domain. Event ID 414 was being logged on to the DNS event log.

The server was a Windows 2008 R2 domain controller with integrated DNS role.  Although this problem is more prevalent with Windows 2003 domain controllers DBNSserver, in this case there is another domain controller on the network to which this server was joined to and promoted to a DC. That other server is a Windows 2003 Windows server.

This was fixed with a simple registry modification that did not even require a reboot. This 100 percent worked for me. Please read here for the steps and details.

The error message seen above in the image can occure when demoting an Active Directory domain controller.

Error demoting domain controller: Failed to configure the service NETLOGON

Received this error while demoting an SBS 2003 Active Directory domain controller as a final part of a migration to SBS 2011.  After overcoming obstacles to get exchange removed, this error came up during the dcpromo process in which the domain control that was formally y the SBS 2003 server would be turned into a member server.

The solution to this problem was simple and hopefully it is for you too if you have come across this post looking for an answer should you be confronting this right now.

Change the DNS configuration on the server you are trying to demote and be sure it’s first DNS server configured in the TCP configuration is assigned to the SBS 2011 server or just another Active Directory DNS server if you are just demoting a non-sbs domain controller.

Setup XEROX 550 LDAP Connection to Active Directory for Lookup Search

Setup XEROX 550 LDAP Connection to Active Directory for Lookup Search

Xerox 500 LDAP configuration for Searching AD

Xerox 550 seraches of AD works very well but configuring the LDAP connection can get confusing if you hit too many options at once without understanding what they do.

We had a perfectly running AD, albeit it’s a 2003 AD, but the principal is the same. Below are screen shots of a working AD LDAP lookup integration for the Xerox 550 using CenterView browser based admin interface. Some of the fields have been changed to denote where you must enter your own information.

Xerox Color 550 LDAP Config

The Xerox LDAP Authentication Settings

Xerox LDAP User Mappings

Xerox LDAP Directory Settings in CenterView

the above settings worked. When you perform a test search, the example results could be misleading. You may be entering the first several letters of a users name but a computer name for example  is displayed that may start with the same several letters. This is actually okay. The important thing is that the search worked. On the Copier/Scanner/Printer itself, you will see the results you expect to see.
